Chopped and Screwed music which is considered by almost everyone, who has listened to it long enough to gain knowledge and respect for it, as the purest form of greatness has its origins in Houston Texas. In fact the numbers suggest that if one were to push chopped N screwed music on the skreets then that person would make enough to buy iced out grillz within weeks depending on their hustle.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF SCREWED MUSIC
The man who is responsible for this movement is the Great DJ Screw. Representing the South side of Houston, Texas, Screw made a name for himself by slowing down rapper’s singles for a small fee. This form of music is now extremely popular around the globe but its creator is no longer with us as mtv.com explains in there article: “A cautionary tale for the entire Houston hip-hop community came on the morning of November 16, 2000, when DJ Screw was found dead at his home. Though doctors found codeine in his system — presumably from the syrup his crew said he liked to indulge in — his death was ultimately ruled to be from undetermined causes. Big Bub, Screw’s cousin, notes that Screw had been previously diagnosed with heart problems.” (www.mtv.com)
His influence took off quickly after his death. “Groups like Three 6 Mafia in Memphis, Tennessee, were having their albums screwed and chopped; in 2000, they would have a minor hit with a song called “Sippin’ on Some Syrup” that extolled the virtue of both drank and screwed music.” (www.mtv.com) “In 2003, David Banner took the Houston sound mainstream by becoming the first artist to release a screwed and chopped version of an album (his major-label debut, Mississippi: The Album) on a major label, just months after the regular version was released in stores.” (www.mtv.com)
With DJ Screw out of the picture, DJ Michael ‘5000’ Watts was left in Houston as the head of the choppin and screwing industry. “Watts estimates that he began slowing down his music in 1996. He started Swisha House Records, which, on the strength of his mixtapes, quickly grew into one of Houston’s biggest labels, developing its own roster of artists, including today’s stars Mike Jones and Paul Wall. Though a rivalry developed between the north and south sides, between the originators and the adopters, Watts is careful to pay homage to the style’s inventor by calling the music screwed and chopped.” (www.mtv.com)
Nowadays Paul Wall is using his unbelievable rise to stardom to promote and create chopped and screwed albums of himself and other rappers from the south. But the Chopped and Screwed notion doesn’t only lie in the music. One can see this idea present in the skreets. For example when it snows that is scientificly explained as God choppin and screwing the rain. For when you chop and screw something you basicly slow it down and skip it. The repetition of chopped and screwed music is a beautiful thing. Never has it been easier to listen to and reflect on a rapper’s message without havin to hit rewind on the track 500 times. With a slowed down song it is easier to pick up on the meanings behind the lyrics.
Also slowed down music is good for the mind. It increases relaxation and promotes driving slow in dropped suv’s to showcase ur rims. This slowing down of the beat will actually speed up the crunkness of the song. The anticipated or known crunkness of a song when it is not chopped is felt in the listener’s spirit. This energy is fightin to explode out the listener of chopped and screwed music’s chest. That is the definition of crunk.
Chopped and Screwed music is not for errrybody however. It is an aquired taste, and only the truly real can understand it. Also if you want to fully appreciate its sound it wouldnt hurt to mix some prescription cough syrup with sprite and sypp on dat drank.
